Best Graphics, Visual Quality
Release Date: November 17, 2017
Platforms: PC / PlayStation 4 / XBOX One
Engine: Frostbite 3
Genre: FPS (Versus)
Developer: DICE
Publisher: Electronic Arts
As expected, DICE’s latest Frostbite 3 game wins this award. This is the third year in a row; DICE’s first Battlefront game, as terrible and dumbed down as it was, won this award in 2015. The equally underdeveloped Battlefield 1 won last year, and Star Wars: Battlefront II (this year’s dumbed down console and children’s version, not the original 2005 masterpiece) wins this year, also taking the throne for overall most realistic graphics of any video game.
While excessive static lighting and shadows are still present (putting it behind mid 2000s PC games), at least DICE finally rendered good dynamic particle effects for the first time in their career. This represents a huge improvement for them, apart from this everything else is mildly improved over Battlefront and Battlefield 1. All three of these games look stunningly realistic until you directly confront their overly static design.
