Jester's Game Tier List by Genre/Type

Member Moderator

Since I'm a game reviewer here, I decided to make this thread to list which games I rank the highest by genre or just general type regardless of genre. This is not my personal favorite games list, this ranking is more in line with our gaming review system. This is to show what I as a reviewer consider to be the most accomplished titles in certain genres (the ones I have enough experience to talk about).

Tier 0 = the highest, most prestigious tier. This post is just the tier list, feel free to ask for explanations for any of the games in a response. I will keep explanations/reasoning out of the OP to keep it condensed. Spoiler tags are just to condense this post.

Each category is sorted by tier, but the games within each tier are merely sorted by chronological order (based on release date). I will only include a few tiers or else I end up trying to rank too much, the goal here is just to show what I as a reviewer consider to be the most elite.

Single player story-driven games - This category ignores genre and just examines single player story-driven games, evaluating them according to our review system linked above with particular emphasis on writing quality, narrative design, quest design, gameplay design. I emphasize the story-driven aspect, there are of course single player games that excel in quest design, level design, gameplay, and lasting appeal, but are meant to be "pure fun," or tactical or strategic challenges, so they are not included in this tier list.

Tier 0

  • Planescape: Torment (1999, 2017 for remaster)
  • Deus Ex (2000)
  • Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (2001)
  • Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (2004)
  • Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer (2007)
  • Fallout: New Vegas (2010)
  • The Talos Principle (2014)
  • SOMA (2015)

Tier 1

  • Fallout 2 (1998)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords (2004)

Tier 2

  • Fallout (1997)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (2007)
  • Penumbra (2007-2008)
  • Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir (2008)
  • Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate (2009)
  • Dragon Age: Origins (2009)
  • realMyst: Masterpiece Editon (2014)
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Chernobyl (2015)
  • XCOM 2 (2016-2017)

Tier 3

  • Anachronox (2001)
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind with these mods (these mods, particularly Morrowind Rebirth, elevates it a tier)
  • Half-Life 2 (2004, 2006-2007) with FakeFactory Cinematic Mod 2013 (this mod elevates it a tier I think)
  • Neverwinter Nights 2 (2006)
  • Mass Effect trilogy (2007, 2010, 2012)
  • Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason (2009)
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010)
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011, 2013 for Director's Cut)
  • Dishonored (2012)
  • Underhell (2013)
  • Metro: Last Light (2013, 2014 for Redux)
  • Metro 2033 Redux (2014)

After this tier would be tiers with TONS of games (plenty of great ones), too many to keep track of perhaps so I will stop here for now.

Role-Playing Games (RPG) - Already covered here.

Tactical Shooters - We wrote about this genre here.

Tier 0

  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Gold (2003)
  • Arma 2 (2009-2010)
  • Arma 3 (2013-2017, now better than Arma 2 in every way and includes all of its content minus its missions via a mod)

Tier 1

  • SWAT 4 (2005)

Tier 2

  • PAYDAY 2 (2013)

Tier 3

  • Natural Selection (2002)
  • Crysis Power Struggle mode (2007)
  • Crysis Wars (2008)
  • Natural Selection 2 (2012)

I have not played the earlier Rainbow Six games (before 3), nor the earlier SWAT games, but I see that they are very similar to those and just graphically inferior, the main difference being with Rainbow Six series; Rogue Spear lets you control up to 4 teams instead of 3, Rainbow Six 3 is far more moddable. Likewise I have not played Arma or Operation Flashpoint.

Team-based PvP Shooters - Quite self-explanatory. PvE and free for all/deathmatch shooters are not included here. Emphasis here is on how well designed its game mode(s) are, meaning how elaborate, logical, approachable, repetitive, and how much it encourages teamwork. Emphasis on team-based. This is going to be a small tier list since there are not enough strongly team-based PvP shooters, too many are just TDM or Conquest-type modes that too freely allow for people to not play as a team. Maybe that's your thing, but they are not ranked in this tier list once again.

Tier 0

  • Natural Selection (2002)
  • Unreal Tournament 2004 (2004, this game includes everything from Unreal Tournament 2003 by the way)
  • Garry's Mod (2004)
  • Crysis (2007)
  • Crysis Wars (2008)
  • Natural Selection 2 (2012)

Tier 1

  • Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)
  • Battlefield 2142 (2006)

Tier 2 (noticeable drop off in teamwork requirements starting with this tier)

  • Left 4 Dead (2008)
  • Left 4 Dead 2 (2009)
  • Rising Storm/Red Orchestra 2 (2013)
  • Rising Storm 2: Vietnam (2017)

I will stop here for now, but I will be adding more categories and games in the future.
