Games with near-perfect Anti-Aliasing

Aliasing is a massive problem in digital imagery. It is the result of square pixels not being able to accurately depict small, straight lines. The best answer to the aliasing problem is more pixels, but such advancements take time.

In today's world, most PC gamers are gaming at 1920 x 1080 (1080p, aka Full HD). Many are using 2560 x 1440 (1440p, aka WQHD or Quad HD) instead, and others are using 3840 x 2160 (4k). The higher the resolution, the less aliasing there is.

Other methods exist specifically to combat aliasing, vaguely referred to as Anti-Aliasing (AA). In this thread we have compiled two lists of games with near perfect Anti-Aliasing to the human eye; the first list is for 2560 x 1440 resolution while the second is for 1920 x 1080. We will update this for 4k in the future, but that list will be the opposite; games with visible aliasing even while maxing out its Anti-Aliasing implementation.

This list is compiled by Enad and I, since you won't find a gamer less tolerant of aliasing than us. By "near-perfect" we refer to games in which you can't see any aliasing in practice, and only a small amount on a very small amount of objects when staring at screenshots looking specifically for aliasing.

Furthermore, we are only including games that achieve this near-perfection with their own built-in AA, so we are not including games that can achieve it with driver forced AA. So, in addition to the games on our list, every DirectX 8 game and every game listed here as having SSAA/HSAA support (note that every game on that list isn't compatible with SSAA/HSAA) can also achieve a virtually aliasing-free image. We specified DX8 games because it is possible to force SSAA into any DX8 game without using compatibility bits, thus it is possible to get perfect AA in all DX8 games on PC!

Game Title/Date Graphics Engine Graphics API Anti-Aliasing Method
ArmA 2 + ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead (2009-2010) Real Virtuality 3 DirectX 9 MSAA + Resolution Scaling (downsampling)
ArmA 3 (2013) Real Virtuality 4 DirectX 11 MSAA + FXAA or SMAA + Resolution Scaling (downsampling) - Doesn't need as much downsampling as ArmA 2
Battlefield 4 (2013) Frostbite 3 DirectX 11 / Mantle MSAA + Resolution Scaling (downsampling)
Battlefield 1 (2016) Frostbite 3 DirectX 12 / DirectX 11 TAA + Resolution Scaling (downsampling)
Fallout 3 (2008) Gamebryo Engine DirectX 9 MSAA + Transparency MSAA
Fallout: New Vegas (2010) Gamebryo Engine DirectX 9 MSAA + Transparency MSAA
Gears of War 4 (2016) Unreal Engine 4 DirectX 12 Temporal AA
Metro 2033 Redux (2014) 4A Engine DirectX 11 Custom post-process AA (MLAA-like) + SSAA (not even needed)
Metro: Last Light (2013) 4A Engine DirectX 11 Custom post-process AA (MLAA-like) + SSAA (not even needed)
Metro: Last Light Redux (2014) 4A Engine DirectX 11 Custom post-process AA (MLAA-like) + SSAA (not even needed)
Obduction (2016) Unreal Engine 4 DirectX 12 Temporal AA
Serious Sam 3: BFE (2011) Serious Engine 3.5 DirectX 11 MSAA + FXAA + 4x SSAA
Shadow Warrior 2 (2016) Road Hog Engine DirectX 11 Temporal AA and at least 150% Supersampling
Star Wars: Battlefront (2015) Frostbite 3 DirectX 12 / DirectX 11 TAA + Resolution Scaling (downsampling)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011) Creation Engine DirectX 9 MSAA + FXAA
The Talos Principle (2014) Serious Engine 4 DirectX 11 / Vulkan / DirectX 9 / OpenGL MSAA + FXAA + 4x SSAA
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux (2015) Unreal Engine 4 DirectX 11 Temporal AA
Thief (2014) Unreal Engine 3 DirectX 11 / Mantle Supersampling

1920 x 1080

At this resolution, lots of supersampling or downsampling is absolutely required to yield near-perfect results. Other than Thief and the Metro games, the games listed below haven't been tested by us but they SHOULD provide virtually perfect AA with the right settings (maxed).
