Ok guys, hope you can help me, I need a new build, as this ones getting slightly old just some system info:

Current Build:
CPU : Q9550 @ 3.6Ghz
GPU : Ati 6870
RAM : Some cheap crappy 2GB
Mobo : Gigabyte G31 (old I know)
PSU : Corsair 550w

New Build:
CPU : i5 750 / i5 760 / i7 860 - Which OC's best?
GPU : ATI 6870 x2 CF
RAM : 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz
Mobo : Asus Maximus III GENE Intel P55
PSU : XFX Core Edition 750w

Any ideas / suggestions, want the most performance on games e.g. BC2

860 overclock best i "think", don't quote me.
but i7 are a waste for gaming at this point.
8gb is overkill, but don't really be a con for having too much ram.
mobo and psu are fine.

video card. I heard the 6870 aren't be best video cards for the buck. There a little slower and pricer then the 460. But since you already got one i won't be suggesting you to buy a new card such as the 460. Other then that it looks fine

i5 760 for CPU.
Everything else looks good to go except the video card, its new but it isn't very good, Spartan tells me you're not playing many intensive games so 2 6870's should be fine. I would go Nvidia If I were you though. 🙂

im rather impressed with my 6870 tbh, no issue running BC2 maxed and getting an really smooth game, but ye, BC2 + Black ops are probly the most graphic needing games i need (hardly any eh?) cheers for feedback lads 🙂

Yeah, probably no need for another then, Crossfire might cause more problems than it will do good.
As for the power supply, why not get a Corsair 750watt? Or keep the one you have unless you REALLY want another 6870.

If you want to overclock, do not populate all DIMM slots. This adds stress to the memory controller which is on the CPU, limiting your overclock since your CPU cooler, which is unlisted, can only handle so much. I'd go for this RAM. It's a damn steal.

Regarding the CPU, the i5 760 and i7 860 have the same overclocking potential really. Same multiplier while the i5 750 is pretty much EOL so ignore it. The i7 860's only benefit is hyper threading which is useless for games. You may also get a 2:12 multiplier option with the i7 860 and not the i5s but this is pointless since you'll be overclocking - therefore your BCLK speed will be higher so you won't use a high RAM divider. You should aim for 200 MHz BCLK - anything higher usually isn't worth the extra voltage needed. See my P55 overclocking guide if you must.

The XFX Core Edition is value oriented and of unknown quality. Go for the Black Edition - it's a Seasonic M12D based PSU so you know it's amazing. Unlike older M12D designs - this one has a cleaner PCB (better soldering) and amazing voltage regulation.

Do you need a new case and CPU cooler?

Because the TX750 is worthless as it is priced next to the Antec TruePower New 750W which is a much newer design with better transient response, spike suppression, ripple suppression, efficiency and it has modular cables. The Corsair HX750 is almost as good as the XFX Black Edition 750W which sells for less.

Wow. That RAM...Such an awesome price!
That PSU is crazy looking too. Makes me wanna get a new one. :p

Mind telling us your CPU cooler, might need a new one if you're gonna go crazy overclocking! 😀

bored.

8GB Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz

the Dual kits = 4gb a stick. Meaning 8gb will be only 2 dimms.

If that's true then it is a great kit. Just be weary of its tall heat sinks which can easily interfere with CPU coolers. But you can just use one powerful fan in a pull configuration and forget about it. Or get a Corsair H50/H70.

Seems like a decent cooler. You don't necessarily need a monster for a 4.2 GHz overclock but you might need a second fan or a more powerful one. This is relatively quiet, great airflow and very good static pressure not to mention it undervolts very well. Use one of these in pull configuration and you'll be good to go. A fan header can easily handle this fan (two as a matter of fact).

It would be the most idiotically idea to buy a i7 or anything from Intel atm, just because as you all probably know, Intel's next CPU series will come in January (the 5th if i remember right). Go for a socket 1155 CPU when they come out!

And the 6870 are alot better than you think, even a 6850 outperform/is even with a 460. An example here from BC2(because it was one of the games he was playing), where you can see that the 6870 is even with the 470!

Fanboy, get your facts right.

Edit; gosh this pic got fucked up, here is a link to the test instead: http://www.sweclockers.com/recension/13175-amd-radeon-hd-6970-och-hd-6950/13#pagehead

I agree, wait for Sandy Bridge if you can. I was thinking perhaps eLm wanted to catch some sick deals on LGA 1156 stuff but at this point I'd just wait since he already has a Q9550 at 3.6 GHz. Indeed the 6850/6870 are almost unrivaled for the price.

Okay, and I forgot to mention depending on the price of the sandy bridge i could buy that as well, my bad. I guess i can wait 😀 cheers guys.
